Morocco
Morocco is a country where African, Arab and European cultures are entwined. It has some really wonderful photographic opportunities. Whether it’s the amazing Moorish architecture, getting lost and haggling in the many souks, visiting the Atlas mountains, or just walking around some of the many cities and villages, Morocco is a fascinating place. Located at the mouth of the Mediterranean Sea, Morocco is the closest point of contact to Europe for Africa as a continent. On this trip I visited Marrakesh, Casablanca, Fez, Rabat, Beni Mellal, Tanaghmeilt as well as a few other villages along the way. There really is something for every keen photographer in Morocco. Though most people don’t object to being at the sharp end of your lens, in Moroccan muslim culture they have this thing called the “evil eye’ or “blue eye’. This is a belief that if you are stared at it will bring bad luck, or steal your soul, hence quite often, especially with older people, you will get an objecting hand waved at you when attempting to take a photo. Always respect this and acknowledge with a smile and point your camera away. I visited in January, and I have to say this was a good time to go as the sun doesn’t get too high so on clear days the light quality is excellent. As you will see most of my shots are people focused.
